Financial Update

In 2007/08 this budget amounted to $135 million. This includes $61 million administered by BCPRA for direct care, which covers the cost of supplies and services needed for dialysis, drug therapy and for the CKD program.

It also includes $74 million administered by BCPRA for indirect care, which is funded through the health authority renal programs and covers renal costs related to:

  • Hospitalizations
  • Use of operating rooms
  • Radiology
  • Lab services

The BCPRA's centralized funding model is unique in Canada. It ensures a balanced approach to funding renal care across all regions of the province and supports the allocation of money based on an overall assessment of patient needs rather than on a location by location basis. The model also provides an incentive for health authorities to support change and innovations in the treatment of patients.

On the strength of its provincial data and its centralized approach to managing renal care, every year the BCPRA provides the BC Ministry of Health with accurate projections of its funding needs. Working together with the health authority renal programs, the agency is also able to consistently stay within budget while continuing to expand access to services for a growing patient population.
