Research highlights

A team of BC renal researchers led by Renal Agency executive director Dr. Adeera Levin has received significant attention for its recent study of the benefits of standardizing tests for glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Measuring GFR offers a method for tracking the health of a patient’s kidneys.

The research team, including Drs. Paul Komenda, Monica Beaulieu and David Seccombe, published the results of the renal community’s initiative to standardize lab analysis of GFR in the January 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. The research results will also be featured in an upcoming issue of Nature Clinical Practice Nephrology.

Using the results from the BC-based initiative, the research team has concluded that standardizing GFR tests could reduce incorrect classification of stage 3 chronic kidney disease by 84%.
