World Kidney Day celebrated across the province
Kidney patients, volunteers and renal teams across the province were out in full force on World Kidney Day, celebrating – along with people in 88 countries – through walks, mall displays, presentations and more.

Cecilia Li of the Vancouver Coastal Renal Program reports that her team walked for an hour at lunch, giving out pins and educating (reminding people to get their blood checked) as they went!

Who says politics are stressful? Saanich South MLA David Cubberley (left) and Burnaby councillor Gary Begin (right) get their blood pressure checked.

Prince George walkers toured the mall and managed a display.

The hemodialysis team at Fort St. John circulated the kidney quiz around the hospital and gave participants t-shirts. Afterwards a group of nurses donned their WKD shirts at a local restuarant to celebrate the upcoming marriage of their newest nurse.

Ray Harrison (the Providence renal program’s 1,500th transplant recipient), North Vancouver-Lonsdale MLA Kathryn Whittred, and Ada Chung, transplant recipient and past president of Chinese Renal Association, pose for a photo at a celebration of the newly renovated hemodialysis unit at St. Paul’s Hospital. More than 100 people participated in the event, including media.

The staff at the BC Renal Agency and PHSA promoted World Kidney Day with an educational session on renal patient dietary restrictions followed by a scenic walk across the Burrard Bridge!
