Committee and Working Groups Update
Medical Advisory Committee Focuses on PROMIS Data and BC Transplant Linkages
At the most recent meeting of the BC Renal Agency’s Medical Advisory Committee (MAC), members discussed improvements to PROMIS that would support the work of physicians, and encouraged stronger linkages with BC Transplant to ensure seamless care for patients who receive kidney transplants.
The MAC is comprised of nephrologists from every health authority and provides guidance on practices and issues specific to nephrologists in the province. The committee also recommends quality standards for BC’s nephrologists, which are aligned with national and international guidelines.
In recent meetings the MAC has discussed potential changes to the PROMIS database to improve the usefulness and timeliness of the quality improvement data that can be pulled from the system. For example, although physicians can currently access clinical data from PROMIS (such as dialysis adequacy and anemia reports) for individual patients, they cannot currently get those same data for patient groups. A sub-committee of the MAC is now working on streamlining this process, so that PROMIS will be able to instantly deliver clinical data for patient groups directly to physicians on request.
A second area of concern for the MAC is establishing an effective interface between nephrologists and BC Transplant, the organization responsible for all kidney transplants in the province. Such an interface is important to ensure that care for patients receiving kidney transplants, as well as those whose transplanted kidneys have failed and who must resume dialysis, is as seamless as possible.
