PROMIS Update

This fall, the IM/IS (information management/information systems) steering committee will evolve into a renal information management council, with representatives from a variety of key Renal Agency committees. The change is based on input received from the community as well as to align with BCPRA’s current strategic planning process. The goal is to continue to provide a formal and sustainable mechanism by which the health authority renal programs can identify IM/IS issues and prioritize needs.

The IM/IS steering committee was formed in 2005 to provide guidance on the ongoing development of PROMIS.  Through the input of the committee, the PROMIS team has made significant progress on a range of initiatives. In partnership with Interior Health, for example, the team developed an electronic chart for chronic disease management, based on the workflow processes of the Penticton Integrated Health Centre. The chart is used to help manage care for the centre’s patients who have kidney disease, heart disease and diabetes.  Building on the work done with Interior Health, the team developed and implemented an electronic chart for the cross-province independent hemodialysis program.

Another success is the redesign of modules used for assessing patient comorbidities. At present, 89 percent of BC renal patients have a comorbidity assessment in PROMIS – up from 74.5 percent in November. This information helps renal professionals to more reliably assess health care needs and outcomes for patients. Data management has also been improved, through a set of reports and procedures to monitor quality of data on regular basis. The PROMIS team is also working closely with Dan Martinusen and the pharmacy formulary review committee to support medication reconciliation for the renal community.

The renal information management council is expected to hold its first meeting in early fall 2008.
