Good Response to Renal Agency DVDs
Patients and renal units throughout BC have expressed strong interest in two new DVDs about renal care recently produced with the support of the Renal Agency.
The DVD Patient to Patient: Renal Care in BC was completed in November 2007 and features renal patients talking about their experiences with kidney disease. The program, which offers five language options, includes sections on living with kidney disease before dialysis, the various dialysis options, kidney transplant, and conservative care.
More than 1,600 copies of the DVD have been distributed to patients and renal units throughout the province and response to the video has been very positive. From evaluation forms returned by users, 99 percent of respondents said the information in the DVD was helpful to them, 78 percent learned something from the DVD they did not know before, 93 percent said the DVD helped them to better understand their treatment options, 94 percent said it encouraged them to learn more and to feel more positive about their condition, and 99 percent said they would recommend the DVD to others with kidney disease.

The Renal Agency’s most recent DVD, Peritoneal Dialysis Training, was completed in March 2008 and more than 430 copies have been distributed to patients through their peritoneal dialysis (PD) caregivers province-wide. Copies have also been sent to programs across Canada through Baxter.
This instructional DVD offers step-by-step information in five languages about performing and managing PD and is believed to be the first training and support tool of its kind for PD patients.
Response to the DVD has been extremely favourable from both patients and from staff members at PD clinics around the province, who have provided the following comments:
"We recently had a patient whose first language is Punjabi and who speaks little English… I was able to show him the video in Punjabi… to help him understand the process of doing an exchange… (and) he was able to take the video home to have other family members understand."
"One of our patients found (the DVD) very helpful as a reminder about the dressing change, as he had forgotten the procedure…"
"My patients all seem to find the DVD helpful, and very reassuring now that they can take it home."
"I have had comments from family members who were not available for all the training, (who said the DVD) was very helpful in filling in some gaps."
