Committee/working group highlight

The 20+ managers and directors who lead renal programs around the province get together twice a year – after each Renal Agency executive committee meeting – to share information, successes, challenges and stories. It’s a valuable forum, and one that helps build a sense of community across renal programs, says Vancouver Island Health Authority’s Anne Gloster, who has chaired the renal managers working group for the past three years.

"Renal managers play a key role in facilitating, motivating and monitoring in the renal programs," says Anne. "We ensure things stay on track and get finished – and because of those experiences, there is a lot we can learn from one another."

The working group discusses both provincial and health authority-specific renal care priorities, including any related barriers and issues as well as how to resolve them.

"And if one program is doing well with a particular initiative, sharing their knowledge is incredibly helpful," says Anne, giving as an example the anemia management protocol: "The protocol was piloted at Fraser Health, and when Lorraine Prysunka presented to the group on the implementation, the rest of us were immediately at an advantage in terms of our own implementation."

As well as their twice-yearly face-to-face meetings, the working group holds teleconferences on specific issues from time to time. In an effort to ensure the forum is as effective as possible, they are also planning a facilitated session to identify priorities and develop a workplan.
